A Minimalist Home for Two
Lan Zhou
“It didn’t feel like a renovation — more like copy-pasting a version of our dream life into reality.”
This was how the homeowners described the space, and it beautifully echoes our original design intention:
A home should do more than meet functional needs — it should respond to emotional rhythms, becoming a soft bridge between a person and their inner world, between daily life and lived meaning.
The project was commissioned by a young couple, who chose to create this shared space together before getting married — a home not just for the present, but for the life ahead. They weren’t interested in eye-catching aesthetics or trendy “scroll-stopping” design. Instead, they cared deeply about the pace of daily life, the warmth of materials, and the kind of atmosphere that gives you permission to sit still for an entire afternoon — doing nothing, and feeling at peace.
Design is about creating a softer connection between people and the world.

Minimalism is not about less — it’s about intentional restraint.
This project embraces minimalism not as an aesthetic shortcut, but as a language of precision and emotional clarity. All unnecessary surface embellishments were removed, allowing materials and light to speak for themselves. What we pursued was not a sterile “purity,” but a controlled, deliberate kind of stillness — one that carries texture, atmosphere, and emotional nuance.
A Dialogue Between Wood and Steel.
Expanses of pale wood veneer create a soft and comforting base tone for the home. Stainless steel, used sparingly, serves both structural and visual roles: inserted into walls, paired against wood, segmented by shadow lines, and polished to catch reflected light. The interplay between the two materials introduces tension and rhythm — a restrained contrast that avoids disruption, but invites attention. The boundaries where they meet are meticulously resolved to reflect minimalism not as reduction, but as detailed discipline.
We weren’t aiming for visual spectacle. What we sought was something quieter — the way wood grain feels under the fingertips, the way light hesitates across a matte wall, or how silence takes shape in a well-calculated void.

Minimalism isn’t less work — it’s more control.
Its difficulty lies not in the drawing board, but in execution:
Every interior corner is defined by a shadow gap; every material junction is hand-aligned on site — calibrated again and again for level, angle, and depth. The architectural expression lies in these quiet tensions, where complexity disappears into clarity.
A Language of Stillness and Restraint
This home does not boast the softest sofa or the brightest light. Instead, it feels like a carefully composed pause — a slow movement of sunlight across the wood grain, a solitary sculptural bird in the corner, a space designed not to impress, but to hold you.
At its core, it is not just a home — it is a tactile, visual, and emotional agreement with life:
“Let’s grow into our days together — slowly, and quietly.”
“A Slit of Light” is not a project designed to chase attention or trends — it is the spatial expression of a way of life.
By stripping away noise and complexity, we chose to preserve only what feels essential and quietly comforting. When architectural language is turned down to its lowest volume, the small details of daily life begin to speak louder.
This is not a space meant to showcase the designer’s signature — it’s an emotional container entirely shaped by and for its owners. It doesn’t carry the name of a particular “style,” and yet it has grown, effortlessly, into their idea of home.

HH STUDIO is an independent interior studio founded in 2021, based in a modest Chinese city, driven by a clear ambition:
To design spaces that resonate quietly, live intimately, and age gracefully
Our name is derived from the founders’ surnames — but it also reflects a deeper belief: design should be thoughtful, intentional, and kind.
In a market often dominated by standardized templates and commercial formulas, we choose the slower path — to listen, observe, and create spaces that feel entirely personal. We don’t impose styles; instead, we use the language of materials, structure, light, and silence to build emotional clarity and spatial honesty.
We believe minimalism is not absence, but precision with purpose.
We believe good design should vanish into the background — until you suddenly realize, you feel at peace.
Every project is a conversation.
Every home, a small universe designed to hold stillness, spontaneity, and soul.
