Ceramicist Kwan Wai Chan of Éphēlis explores intimacy through sculptural vessels at WOOL Hong Kong

Hong Kong design retailer WOOL presents "In Search of Touch", the first hometown exhibition by ceramicist Kwan Wai Chan, featuring a collection of handcrafted vessels, lighting fixtures and domestic objects that investigate themes of human connection.

The exhibition, which runs from 12 to 26 April 2025, showcases Chan's studio Éphēlis in a carefully curated display at WOOL's Sai Ying Pun gallery space. Following successful showings in Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul and Paris, this marks Chan's first comprehensive solo presentation in Hong Kong.

Chan established Éphēlis in 2018 after transitioning from a career in fashion design at Christian Dior Couture. The studio's name, derived from the Greek word for "freckles," reflects Chan's personal narrative of challenging beauty standards in Asian culture.

"The name embodies my exploration of imperfect beauty and self-acceptance," Chan explains. "Through my work, I celebrate femininity and intimacy while creating moments of contemplation."

Dialogue Vase Series

The centerpiece of the exhibition is the Dialogue Vase No. 18, a set of three vessels that appear to lean towards each other without touching. These sculptural pieces represent human desire for connection while maintaining individual space, creating a visual tension that speaks to contemporary relationships.

Arum Wall Lamp

Chan's first venture into lighting design, the Arum Wall Lamp, features a distinctive void at its center. The piece transforms negative space into a meditation on presence and absence, with light playing a crucial role in bridging physical gaps.
