- At Space Matrix, we believe in crafting workspaces that inspire and empower. When American Express approached us to design and build their Bangalore office, they sought a workplace revolution – a space that captured their dynamic spirit, fostered a sense of belonging, and seamlessly adapted to the ever-changing business landscape.
- Empathy: The Cornerstone of Design
- Our first step was understanding the needs of Amex employees. Through careful research, we discovered their desire for inclusivity, a sense of ownership over their work environment, and spaces that ignited creativity and collaboration. This human-centric approach became the cornerstone of our design vision.
- The Birth of a Vertical Micro-Campus
- Amex’s transformed workspace became a vibrant vertical micro-campus experience. Spread across five floors, a diverse range of amenities unfolded. Social spaces buzzed with activity, meeting rooms facilitated brainstorming sessions, and tranquil corners offered moments of respite. This deliberate layout encouraged movement throughout the day, fostering connections and collaboration among employees from different teams.
- To further enrich the experience, each floor embraced a unique design theme guided by ‘Hear, Nourish, See, Speak, and Sow’. This philosophy manifested in the choice of artwork, furniture, and the overall ambience of each level. Imagine a vibrant coffee bar and comfortable lounges on the ‘Hear’ floor – perfect for informal conversations. Or picture the ‘See’ floor featuring an inspirational art gallery and open workspaces bathed in natural light.
- Flexibility: Adapting to the Flow of Business
- Recognizing the dynamic nature of business, flexibility was paramount. We designed a modular system where the basic unit – a single workstation – could morph into clusters based on real-time needs. Meeting rooms, conference areas, and collaboration spaces transformed seamlessly based on project requirements. This ensured the space could adapt to Amex’s evolving operations, guaranteeing its relevance and functionality for years to come.
- The ‘Mother Floor’ and Work Floor Synergy
- The 9th floor served as the central hub, the aptly named ‘Mother Floor’. This level housed all essential common amenities and critical support functions. The remaining floors, designated as ‘work floors’, offered a dedicated focus on productivity, each equipped with localized amenities for employee convenience. This strategic division streamlined operations while maintaining a sense of community within the vertical micro-campus.
- A Testament to Human-Centric Design
- The results were astounding. The space witnessed a four-fold increase in alternative work points, empowering employees with greater autonomy and choice in their work environment. Meeting points and community spaces tripled, fostering collaboration and a vibrant sense of connection among colleagues.
- More importantly, the design instilled a deep sense of pride and belonging within the Amex workforce. The space served as a physical manifestation of Amex’s brand identity, its values woven into the very fabric of the environment. Additionally, the integration of the Bluework Approach, prioritising employee wellbeing and sustainability, amplified the positive impact. The office empowered individuals to perform at their best, fostering a sense of holistic well-being that translated into increased productivity.
- Amex’s Bangalore office is a shining example of innovative and human-centric workplaces. This project exemplifies the enduring impact of Space Matrix’s design vision and our unwavering commitment to shaping exceptional workspace experiences. We create environments that inspire employees, drive collaboration, and empower companies to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of the modern business world.
