Project Overview
SHASHA COFFEE is a creative cold brew coffee brand established in Beijing. Located in the serene Dongsi San Tiao Hutong of Dongcheng district, its presence communicates the idea of urban slow-living. Dongsi is located in the heart of Dongcheng District in Beijing, a prosperous commercial circle since the Yuan Dynasty. As one of the first batch of historic cultural blocks in China, Dongsi has attracted the coffee industry with its unique charm and a history of more than 700 years, while coffee also contributes to the vitality of the old city.

The ZaYuan (referring to a messy courtyard occupied by various households) is made up of two pitched tile roof houses on the north and south sides, and two flat-roofed houses on the east and west. Our renovation includes the street-facing north house and the utility room on the west. We started by tearing down the house’s light-weight partition walls and ceilings in order to create as much room as we could given its small size. The original beam-column structure exposed after the demolition was fully preserved after renovation.

After research, we discovered that the neighborhood is home to a significant
number of typical Chinese Siheyuan and retains a complete ‘fishbone-like’ Hutong texture. As a result, we created a moving line that combines multiple functions like the bar, booth, and private seating space in our design by fusing the fishbone Hutong pattern with the original house structure.

The renovation project adopts the original color scheme of the street-facing facade – gray wall and tile. Recycled bricks and old elm boards were used, dotted with gravel, slate, and greenery, to create a natural and unified atmosphere.

The lower space on the south side is made into a private seating area, with three L-shaped half walls separating three seating areas, each with a view of the pond below the staircase. This design eliminates distractions from other visitors while yet allowing for light and ventilation.

The private seating area’s walls and flooring are segmented into several areas by washed stone surfaces. The rough and simple characteristics of the millet stone and gray cement form a distinct texture contrast. Retractable bamboo curtains are placed above the half walls. When raised, it creates a more integrated and open space. When lowered, it adds a sense of tranquility.

The bar and booth area are located across from one another, with an octagonal window acting as a pick-up point for them. In addition to bringing people closer to nature, the flower pond in the centre of the zigzagging booth and the flower stand made from a Chinese medicine cabinet offer more chances for interaction and conversation among customers.

To make the otherwise steep steps more easy to use, we extended the length of the staircase. The original timber frame column is encircled by a stepped platform, giving the structure a unified appearance.

We are welcomed into an open area comprised of gravel, recycled tiles, and wooden boards, which echoes the style of the nearby Hutong as we ascend the stairs to the second-floor terrace.

A panoramic view of the original north and south pitched tile roofs naturally comes into view as one relaxes on an old bamboo chair. Through this Hutong renovation project, we hope to not only make interpersonal and human-nature connections, but also explore the emotional ties between urban residents and Hutong culture.
