When the kids grow up but haven’t yet totally left the nest, sometimes said nest needs to grow. These days, most people are also home all the time, so what used to feel like enough space suddenly, well, doesn’t. Thus it was for a family and their summer home on Lake Agawam in Southampton, New York. They turned to interior designer Markham Roberts, who had worked on the home years ago, for a reboot. “The kids are older now and much more independent with their friends. We all needed our own spaces so we wouldn’t be on top of each other,” says his client.
A family with grown—but, these days, very much present—children turned to designer Markham Roberts to refresh their Southhampton, New York, summer residence. In the kitchen, the breakfast table, sofa, and banquette are custom by Roberts. Banquette fabric is Ralph Lauren Home La Garoupe in Indigo. Fabric for sofa is Clarence House Luke in the color Pool. Chairs at table are by Palacek.
Dining table is custom by Roberts. Painted chest of drawers is Swedish Gustavian. Artwork is by Ellsworth Kelly. Chairs are slipcovered in Scalamandre Paradise fabric. Chandelier is vintage metal painted to look like coral from Creel & Gow.
In the family room, a tufted chair at left is custom by Roberts in Larsen Atlanta linen fabric. Sofa is custom in Clarence House Perthshire tweed fabric. Chair at right is also custom in Radish Moon Textiles Melon Flower. Photograph is by Richard Misrach. Lamp is MR Alexandra by Roberts for Christopher Spitzmiller.
Also in the family room, the ceiling is decorative painted wood planking. Walls have painted wood stiles and rails with upholstered inset panels. Ceiling fixture from Passion 4 Wood. Artwork by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Carpet, console table, bench, armchairs, plant stand, and coffee table custom by Roberts. Ivory lacquer occasional table is by Robert Kuo. Leather armchairs are midcentury Danish by Lyngfeldt Larsen.
In yet another view of the same central living space, the chair to the left of the custom credenza is by Hans Wegner. The lamp on the cabinet is a Bob Kinzie Earthenware Lamp and the floor lamp is French modernist by Pierre Guariche.
The pantry and bar is painted in a custom lacquer. Cabinetry is custom with countertops in mahogany. Backsplash tiles are from Mosaic House. Floor is decorative paint.
In the master bedroom, the bed, quilt, sofa, and end table are custom by Roberts. The plaster chandelier is by C.J. Peters. English Majolica trunk form garden stool by Minton. Shagreen chest by Garrison Rousseau. Art above chest is by Ellsworth Kelly.
The main bedroom floor is custom spotted marbled decorative paint. Lantern is by Charles Edwards. Antique slipper chair from James Sansum Fine and Decorative Art. Octagonal inlaid table by John Rosselli. Shower in statuary marble.
Architecture of the poolhouse exterior is by Meyer Davis.
Inside the poolhouse, resin wicker furniture is from Walters Wicker. Cushion fabric is Link Tundra in color Navy. Teak low table is custom. End tables are from Serena & Lily. Art is by Allen Ruppersberg. Fan from Hunter Douglas.
On the pergola, teak furniture is from RH. Cushion fabric is Perennials Chameleon in the color Azure Sea. Pillow fabric is Stark Regatta Stripe in the color Denim.
