Austin Bed by Henrik Pedersen. With over 300 stores across 65 countries, contemporary Danish furniture brand BoConcept can certainly call themselves a global retailer. Two cabinet makers founded the brand in 1952, in the then-sleepy town of Herning, Denmark, with a simple ambition to introduce Danish furniture to a broader audience. Some decades later, their vision without doubt materialized, backed by well-considered furniture built on the Danish design principles of simplicity, craftsmanship, elegant functionality and quality materials. First published in 1998, BoConcept has now launched the 21st edition of its annual catalogue. The publication delivers 164 pages of inspiration showcasing the brand’s new collection in Danish homes around the Jutland Peninsula and the island of Zealand. Aligned with their latest design collaborations, the catalogue is penned by award-winning designers including Karim Rashid, Henrik Pedersen and Morten Georgsen. The aesthetic is homely and attainable, providing consumers with inspiration that is aspirational, emotive, and not out of reach.
A standout is Karim Rashid’s new Chelsea collection featuring a sofa and matching chair. Epitomising Rashid’s fluid organic forms, the collection’s lack of hard surfaces and sharp edges creates tactile comfort and a sense of calm vital to compact living spaces. The designer explains, “For twenty years I was living in Chelsea in New York. And a lot of the new condominiums tend to be small. And when you’re living in a small space, less is more. You need a soft environment and space to breathe, relax, socialise and work.” Amorphous and soft, engineered to be comfortable, the Chelsea sofa and chair are crafted using cold-cure foam over a steel frame and springs, atop a concealed black timber plinth which conjures a sense of levitation. BoConcept believes in enabling their customers to adapt their pieces to individual lifestyle, and as such, the majority of designs are customisable across size, colour, material, configuration or components. This freedom is epitomised in the brand’s selection of over 120 luxury leathers and fabrics. The new 2020 collection is now available to view in BoConcept Sydney showrooms in Crows Nest and Moore Park. Outside their residential offering, the company’s trade division specialises in offering solutions to commercial and contract spaces.
