Helmed by its third generation, flooring brand Bolon celebrates its 70th anniversary this year. Partnering with diverse talent and prioritizing innovative machinery and perspectives have ensured Bolon has stood the test of time. The 2019 Collection, Diversity, celebrates variation, participation, and inspiration through the lens of ‘seven decades of daring to be different’. Styling the new flooring with playful, seemingly random objects – giant lips, shiny orbs and a coffee mug – indicates the bold personality that drives the company. The collection features a total of 12 colourways in three different patterns – Bling, Buzz, and Bouquet – all of which are complimentary when combined. Each pattern is designed to be subtle enough to work as a neutral, yet distinctive enough to bring floor space in hotels or offices to life. Bling’s twisted, chain link pattern is large in scale and bold in execution. Bouquet’s floral motif is inspired by a watercolour painting and features a mélange of colour and glass threads. Buzz is softer and more modest with a slight shimmer, geared toward covering large areas. The designs are available in four base colours, grey, beige, brown, and black, into which vibrant, earthy hues such as terracotta, aquamarine and pine green have been woven on Bolon’s jacquard looms. Buzz and Bouquet are also available as Bolon Studio tiles, allowing for more diversity in use. See more from Bolon on Yellowtrace here.
Bolon’s Diversity Campaign Image.Harking back to Bolon’s roots, 33% of the material for the new collection is recycled. Nils-Erik Eklund founded Bolon after having the idea to produce rag rugs from textile waste, and granddaughters Annica and Marie Eklund continue to lead with forward-thinking ideas, including putting woven vinyl flooring on the map. “The factory in Ulricehamn was always at our core. That’s where we grew up, where we have our roots,” say Annica and Marie. “We make our yarn ourselves, and we have an environmental work station where we can cut and grind waste material to reuse in the flooring. If we see an opportunity or a trend, we never have to wait. We can act on it straight away and catch it before it’s gone.” Sustainability has been a constant motivation behind Bolon’s product development. In 2010, they were the first flooring company to develop a plasticiser based entirely on renewable raw plant materials, from which the Botanic collection was born. Rather than showing flooring, the campaign was presented as a series of images that demonstrated the materials capabilities by making a series of flowers with the weave (which still happens to be one of our all-time favourites!)
