We’ve teamed up with modern spectacle makers Cubitts to co-design a bespoke frame thats been hand-made in London. The one-off specs are available to win by purchasing entries to a prize draw, with all proceeds going to Maggie’s cancer charity. Entries close on Thursday 28th November with the lucky winner announced on Friday 29th November 2019. Enter now via purchasing a ticket.
Together with the design team at Cubitts, we worked to create a modern matt black frame with individually forged 9ct gold hinges and custom branded lettering. The design aims at a something that is at once classic and timeless in its form, but which feels contemporary in its detailing, and which reflects principles we hold dear – namely, simplicity of design, the use of quality materials and a high degree of craftsmanship.
That crafted element is partly the work of silversmith Peter Musson, who says of his work, “I create sophisticated silverware by smoothly combining the freedom of making by hand with controlled computer techniques. I embrace the unique decorative finish of both methods and display evidence of this process. The result is silver pieces that are as honest as they are elegant.” Steering away from his usual use of silver for this project, Peter crafted hinges, screws and pins from hardwearing 9ct gold that were then assembled with the frame by Cubitts.
Like all of Cubitt’s frames, ours – which we’ve named ‘Halliford in honour of the street name our old headquarters was on – was handmade in the traditional way at the brand’s King’s Cross workshop. There, they went through 50 stages of manufacturing including four stages of polishing and pin drilling, which, although complicated and time-expensive, produces a higher-quality frame.
The winner of the raffle will be able to choose to have the frame with either optical or sun lenses, with or without a prescription. They can also choose to have the leather case, available in several colour options, monogrammed with a name or initials in either gold, silver, or blind lettering.
To accompany the frames, we have also designed a limited-edition cleaning cloth that will be given away with every pair of Cubitts glasses purchased in the next six months and is also available to buy in-store and online, with all proceeds going to Maggie’s too.
Maggies Centres is a UK registered charity that provides free practical, emotional and social support to people with cancer and their family and friends, following the ideas about cancer care originally laid out by Maggie Keswick Jencks.
Built by leading architects (including Ab and Richard Rogers, Zaha Hadid and Frank Gehry) in the grounds of NHS cancer hospitals, Maggie’s Centres are places with professional staff on hand to offer the support people need, from practical advice to emotional support and friendly encounters.
The first Maggie’s Centre opened in Edinburgh in 1996 and since then Maggie’s has continued to grow, with 20 Centres at major NHS cancer hospitals in the UK and abroad.
For your chance to win the glasses, buy an entry to the raffle here – go on, it’s for a good cause! And, check out the film we’ve made with Cubitts founder Tom Broughton at home in the Isokon Building penthouse to mark the partnership here.
