Were excited to announce a new partnership with premium paint manufacturer Farrow & Ball, with whom were exploring the use of colour in modern living spaces in a four-part film series, Living with Colour. You can watch the first episode here.
The first instalment of the series takes us to the Cambridge home of artist Alessandra Taccia, whose still life paintings depict everyday objects with a studied simplicity, in which form and balance are explored with a restrained, muted palette – as ‘a way to see the subtlety of colours, says Alessandra.
Working with a minimal colour range is not limited to her work, however. Alessandras Victorian terrace home has been decorated with the same artistic sensibility, as though it were one of her canvases. ‘I believe colours have a voice, says Alessandra, explaining that, for her, strong colours are too loud and provoke too many distractions, hence why she has opted for School House White in her dining room. As in her work, the colours on her walls draw attention not to themselves, but to the space they fill and the objects they backdrop.
On first inspection, this neutral scheme may seem to be the antithesis of a life with colour but, as Alessandra explains, she had to experiment with different paints when she moved in, indicating the thought needed to achieve a sense of balance and harmony through a restrained palette. ‘Even a white will never really be white. Its white in your mind, says Alessandra, highlighting the effect of natural light to amplify and soften all colours, imbuing tonal variation from morning to night.
