In 2010, I travelled to Cornwall to research into the extensive influence of the mining industry onto the landscape. I visited twelve different
mines and collected samples of residue from the porcelain, copper and tin industries. The samples formed the base material for a ceramic paint that can be used to color porcelain. This Spring I visited Cornwall for the second time. I collected 50 new samples of different industries such as silver, lead, tin and copper. These photographs showing the intense colors of the different places where I did collect the materials. By treating materials as paint and using them to color earthenware and china, we developed a color chart with 120 different colors. Twelve materials originating from the china, tin and copper industry in Cornwall were used to form the basis for this chart. The colors show the richness of the landscape in which they were once flourishing industries. In order to turn them into ceramic paint, the materials have been dried and ground, diluted with water and applied as a color coating to earthenware and china. In ‘The Research Collection’ the colors are used to color 4 basics; an espresso cup, a coffee cup, a small saucer and a cone. Each one is unique and colored differently. The production process of immaculate white porcelain is extremely damaging. One kilo is accompanied by six kilos of waste, the mining changes landscapes once and for all. Colour, texture and structure of the waste are the source of this ceramic series. The abundance and diversity of the residue create an extra dimension of beauty, always in a 6:1 proportion.

About Kirstie van Noort
Kirstie van Noort (1986) sees design as a way to communicate a certain process or the story behind a material. When she is intrigued by one of these a study starts by making detailed test and experiments. The outcome of the research could form the foundation of the concept behind a final product or result in the research itself. Text by Kirstie van Noort & gooood
