Appreciation towards H&L studio for providing the following description: SC2013
Reflection - a criticism of existing urban development By using conventional methods of site studies, it was discovered that the surrounding developments within the vicinity of this site have a great
uncertainty, such as possible expansion or reduction of the Harbin Institute of Technology campus, changes in surrounding small businesses
and communities, the governance situation of Majiagou, the evolution of the urban road network and the displacement of the local population. All of these have a direct impact on the appearance of this site, thus its final form should be indistinct and allowing for dynamic growth. In this
regard, the design should not attempt to solve all possible changes in one architectural solution. Instead we should look at the site with an
attitude toward considering the flexibility of zoning and given the existing context. In the high-speed process of a typical Chinese city development, demolition and construction encompass the full life cycle of a building. The
so-called historical preservation is mostly hypothetical. But from a different angle, demolition and construction can also bring new change to a
building. With sufficient emphasis and exaggerated action, reorganization will be able to give an old building a new life and meaning. This is
possible by giving a new perspective on the preservation of value, much like that of a Japanese Shinto shrine. In three-dimensional cities, it is
possible to observe one specific area from different extents. Its personality, whether it is a standalone existence, or it is concealed within the
environment; all these factors can generate an historic objective at a specific time. If it is wished for growth and transformation over time, then it
should exist as a gesture of a work of art. Therefore we are able to strip experience and perception from the reality of the urban phenomenon, to
let it become an extreme contradiction; an experience that is contrasting and completely out of the ordinary. In the course of time environmental
changes implant functions incrementally as required, and this combination of reality and fantasy can stimulate people’s desire and imagination
for the given site.
Final Vision:
It is a museum for the city, a floating work of art, as well as a three dimensional public park.
